Overuse and repetitive motion is the cause of Sever’s disease. It is a condition that affects the heel of the foot in young children and teenagers, and typically occurs in active people of this age group. It happens as a result of the muscles, tendons, and ligaments pulling on the growth plate in the heel when overuse occurs. Common symptoms that are associated with this condition can consist of heel pain, and it is often worse upon arising in the morning. Effective treatments often begin with temporarily stopping the activity that caused the condition, followed by elevating the affected foot. If you notice your child is limping, please schedule a consultation with a podiatrist who can properly treat Sever’s disease.

Sever's disease often occurs in children and teens. If your child is experiencing foot or ankle pain, see one of our podiatrists from Port Richmond Family Footcare. Our doctors can treat your child’s foot and ankle needs.

Sever’s Disease

Sever’s disease is also known as calcaneal apophysitis, which is a medical condition that causes heel pain I none or both feet. The disease is known to affect children between the ages of 8 and 14.

Sever’s disease occurs when part of the child’s heel known as the growth plate (calcaneal epiphysis) is attached to the Achilles tendon. This area can suffer injury when the muscles and tendons of the growing foot do not keep pace with bone growth. Therefore, the constant pain which one experiences at the back of the heel will make the child unable to put any weight on the heel. The child is then forced to walk on their toes.

Symptoms

Acute pain – Pain associated with Sever’s disease is usually felt in the heel when the child engages in physical activity such as walking, jumping and or running.

Highly active – Children who are very active are among the most susceptible in experiencing Sever’s disease, because of the stress and tension placed on their feet.

Sudden Ankle Pain May Be Due to Arthritis

If you suddenly experience ankle pain without any apparent reason or injury, it may have been brought on by some form of arthritis. For instance, osteoarthritis occurs when cartilage between bones wears down, causing them to rub together. This condition can sometimes cause sudden pain, often in the morning. Another type of arthritis—rheumatoid arthritis—causes your immune system to malfunction and attack healthy tissue. The lining in joints of the toes and ankles are a common location for rheumatoid arthritis to develop. A third type of arthritis that can affect your ankles is reactive arthritis. This occurs when a bacterial infection in another part of the body is responsible for generating arthritic symptoms like swelling and pain in your ankles. Gout is an arthritic condition caused by a build-up of uric acid in your body, which can crystallize on joints. Although gout typically affects the big toe, it can also develop in other joints, such as the ankle. Painful gout flare-ups are known to be intense and sudden, often occurring in the middle of the night. Pain of any kind in your ankles should prompt a visit to the podiatrist as soon as possible for an accurate diagnosis and treatment.

Ankle pain can have many different causes and the pain may potentially be serious. If you have ankle pain, consult with one of our podiatrists from Port Richmond Family Footcare. Our doctors will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

Ankle pain is any condition that causes pain in the ankle. Due to the fact that the ankle consists of tendons, muscles, bones, and ligaments, ankle pain can come from a number of different conditions.

Causes

The most common causes of ankle pain include:

  • Types of arthritis (rheumatoid, osteoarthritis, and gout)
  • Ankle sprains
  • Broken ankles
  • Achilles tendinitis
  • Achilles tendon rupture
  • Stress fractures
  • Tarsal tunnel syndrome
  • Plantar fasciitis

Symptoms

Symptoms of ankle injury vary based upon the condition. Pain may include general pain and discomfort, swelling, aching, redness, bruising, burning or stabbing sensations, and/or loss of sensation.

Diagnosis

Due to the wide variety of potential causes of ankle pain, podiatrists will utilize a number of different methods to properly diagnose ankle pain. This can include asking for personal and family medical histories and of any recent injuries. Further diagnosis may include sensation tests, a physical examination, and potentially x-rays or other imaging tests.

Treatment

Just as the range of causes varies widely, so do treatments. Some more common treatments are rest, ice packs, keeping pressure off the foot, orthotics and braces, medication for inflammation and pain, and surgery.

How Did I Get a Heel Spur?

A spur is a bony growth that may develop due to repetitive irritation or stress. As its name suggests, a heel spur develops on the heel bone or calcaneus. More specifically, it typically forms in one of two places on the heel bone. An inferior calcaneal spur forms underneath the heel bone and is associated with plantar fasciitis, a common ligament injury in the foot. A posterior calcaneal spur forms on the back of the heel bone and is associated with Achilles tendonitis. Heel spurs can be asymptomatic or cause sharp pain, dull aches, stiffness, and numbness in the affected heel. Corns and calluses also often form over the affected area. If you have painful heels, please see a podiatrist for a diagnosis and treatment.

Heel spurs can be incredibly painful and sometimes may make you unable to participate in physical activities. To get medical care for your heel spurs, contact one of our podiatrists from Port Richmond Family Footcare. Our doctors will do everything possible to treat your condition.

Heels Spurs

Heel spurs are formed by calcium deposits on the back of the foot where the heel is. This can also be caused by small fragments of bone breaking off one section of the foot, attaching onto the back of the foot. Heel spurs can also be bone growth on the back of the foot and may grow in the direction of the arch of the foot.

Older individuals usually suffer from heel spurs and pain sometimes intensifies with age. One of the main condition's spurs are related to is plantar fasciitis.

Pain

The pain associated with spurs is often because of weight placed on the feet. When someone is walking, their entire weight is concentrated on the feet. Bone spurs then have the tendency to affect other bones and tissues around the foot. As the pain continues, the feet will become tender and sensitive over time.

Treatments

There are many ways to treat heel spurs. If one is suffering from heel spurs in conjunction with pain, there are several methods for healing. Medication, surgery, and herbal care are some options.

If you have any questions feel free to contact our office located in Lumberton, NJ, . We offer the latest in diagnostic and treatment technology to meet your needs.

Ankle Fracture ORIF

An ankle fracture open reduction or internal fixation (ORIF) is a type of surgical procedure that can be used to fix a severe ankle fracture. Done while under anesthesia, open reduction means that any displaced bones will be put back into proper alignment. Internal fixation means that hardware such as wires, screws, pins, or plates, will be used to hold the bones in place as they heal. Following the surgery, a cast or splint will likely need to be worn on the injured leg. This prevents movement and allows the broken bones to heal properly. Your doctor may also prescribe medications to manage pain or prevent infection. To learn more about this and other treatment options for broken ankles, please consult with a podiatrist.

Broken ankles need immediate treatment. If you are seeking treatment, contact one of our podiatrists from Port Richmond Family Footcare. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Broken Ankles
A broken ankle is experienced when a person fractures their tibia or fibula in the lower leg and ankle area. Both of these bones are attached at the bottom of the leg and combine to form what we know to be our ankle.

When a physician is referring to a break of the ankle, he or she is usually referring to a break in the area where the tibia and fibula are joined to create our ankle joint. Ankles are more prone to fractures because the ankle is an area that suffers a lot of pressure and stress. There are some obvious signs when a person experiences a fractured ankle, and the following symptoms may be present.

Symptoms of a Fractured Ankle

  • Excessive pain when the area is touched or when any pressure is placed on the ankle
  •  Swelling around the area
  •  Bruising of the area
  • Area appears to be deformed

If you suspect an ankle fracture, it is recommended to seek treatment as soon as possible. The sooner you have your podiatrist diagnose the fracture, the quicker you’ll be on the way towards recovery.

Painful Conditions of the Inner Foot

There are many painful conditions that can develop in a variety of areas on the feet. Where the pain is felt can indicate what is causing the pain. One common and well known painful condition is a bunion, which causes the joint of the big toe to become swollen and points the big toe towards the smaller toes. Another common painful injury is an abductor hallucis strain. This occurs when the abductor hallucis muscle, which runs from the heel to the big toe, gets strained or torn, leading to pain and tenderness in the area. Yet another well known injury, a medial calcaneal nerve entrapment, can lead to a burning and tender sensation along the inside of the foot, similar to tarsal tunnel syndrome. Because of the variety of injuries that can lead to foot pain, patients who are suffering from foot pain should consult with a podiatrist for a proper diagnosis.

Are Foot Baths Effective?

Many people enjoy the benefits of foot baths. They can be an effective form of foot therapy and may have a positive effect on the overall body. Blood circulation may be improved when different water temperatures are used. Some patients may find that adding eucalyptus oil to the bath water may help to relieve stress. Additionally, the muscles may feel more relaxed when lavender drops are used. Research has indicated that apple cider vinegar added to cool water may be helpful in reducing swollen feet and ankles. If you are interested in learning about additional benefits of soaking the feet or are dealing with foot related concerns and seeking advice, please speak with a podiatrist who can provide you with professional treatment options.

Foot therapy is often necessary for those recovering from either foot deformities or foot injuries. If you have concerns regarding therapy, one of our podiatrists of Port Richmond Family Footcare. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Most Common Injuries

People who are active or athletes are prone to a variety of injuries. Therefore, it is often important to take part in physical therapy in order to quickly get back on the right track.

What to Do When Injured

Physical Therapy – This specialized treatment will focus on the affected area, speeding up recovery and the overall healing process. It is a proven method that has helped millions of people return from any injury.

During physical therapy you will undergo regimented training to get back into full form. Training is often very difficult, especially at first when the foot feels weak. Physical therapy often involves:

Basic stretching and twisting exercises – getting the feet’s mobility and flexibility up.

Massaging – the therapist will massage the injured area in order to activate the muscles and relax them.

Strengthening Exercises – this allows the muscles in the affected area to regain their full strength, a vital step towards full recovery.

As the body ages, a variety of foot conditions are more likely to develop. For example, foot pads can thin out, nails can become brittle, skin and tissues may lose elasticity, arches can sag, and circulation problems can lead to foot conditions such as sores. Because of this, older adults should be mindful about taking good care of their feet to stay healthy, which in turn will help to avoid potentially dangerous conditions from developing. Shoes should be comfortable and fit well to avoid corns, bunions, and calluses. To avoid fungal infections, feet and toes should be kept clean and thoroughly dried. Moisturizer should be applied to keep skin supple and to avoid cracked heels from developing. Stretching the feet, walking, and elevating the feet can aid in keeping your blood flow. Toenails should be trimmed straight across and even with the tip of the toe. Older adults with diabetes should inspect their feet daily to detect any cut or abnormality that may develop into a wound. Regular check-ups with a podiatrist can also help older adults keep their feet and ankles in good shape.

Proper foot care is something many older adults forget to consider. If you have any concerns about your feet and ankles, contact one of our podiatrists from Port Richmond Family Footcare. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

The Elderly and Their Feet

As we age we start to notice many changes in our body, but the elder population may not notice them right away. Medical conditions may prevent the elderly to take notice of their foot health right away. Poor vision is a lead contributor to not taking action for the elderly.

Common Conditions

  • Neuropathy – can reduce feeling in the feet and can hide many life-threatening medical conditions.
  • Reduced flexibility – prevents the ability of proper toenail trimming, and foot cleaning. If left untreated, it may lead to further medical issues.
  • Foot sores – amongst the older population can be serious before they are discovered. Some of the problematic conditions they may face are:
  • Gouging toenails affecting nearby toe
  • Shoes that don’t fit properly
  • Pressure sores
  • Loss of circulation in legs & feet
  • Edema & swelling of feet and ankles

Susceptible Infections

Diabetes and poor circulation can cause general loss of sensitivity over the years, turning a simple cut into a serious issue.

Signs of Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis is one of the most leading causes of heel pain. It can occur when the plantar fascia, the band of tissues that run along the bottom of the foot connecting the heel to the toes, becomes inflamed or torn. Plantar fasciitis may result in a sharp or dull pain at the bottom of the foot near the heel that is most severe in the morning. Pain may also intensify after carrying weight and cause the heel to swell. There are a variety of factors that can contribute to plantar fasciitis that include excessive training, rapid weight gain, a change in activity, tight calf muscles, improper footwear, and flat feet. Patients who are suffering with heel pain and think they may have plantar fasciitis should consult with a podiatrist for a proper diagnosis.

Plantar fasciitis is a common foot condition that is often caused by a strain injury. If you are experiencing heel pain or symptoms of plantar fasciitis, contact one of our podiatrists from Port Richmond Family Footcare. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes of heel pain. The plantar fascia is a ligament that connects your heel to the front of your foot. When this ligament becomes inflamed, plantar fasciitis is the result. If you have plantar fasciitis you will have a stabbing pain that usually occurs with your first steps in the morning. As the day progresses and you walk around more, this pain will start to disappear, but it will return after long periods of standing or sitting.

What Causes Plantar Fasciitis?

  • Excessive running
  • Having high arches in your feet
  • Other foot issues such as flat feet
  • Pregnancy (due to the sudden weight gain)
  • Being on your feet very often

There are some risk factors that may make you more likely to develop plantar fasciitis compared to others. The condition most commonly affects adults between the ages of 40 and 60. It also tends to affect people who are obese because the extra pounds result in extra stress being placed on the plantar fascia.

Prevention

  • Take good care of your feet – Wear shoes that have good arch support and heel cushioning.
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • If you are a runner, alternate running with other sports that won’t cause heel pain

There are a variety of treatment options available for plantar fasciitis along with the pain that accompanies it. Additionally, physical therapy is a very important component in the treatment process. It is important that you meet with your podiatrist to determine which treatment option is best for you.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our office located in Lumberton, NJ, . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot care needs.
