Podiatry as a Career Choice

Doctors specialize in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of many body parts, and podiatrists are experts in all conditions pertaining to the foot and ankle. There are several years of education that must precede becoming a DPM, which is the abbreviation that stands for Doctor of Podiatric Medicine. After obtaining a bachelor's degree, a four-year degree from an accredited podiatry school must be received, followed by a three-year intensive training program otherwise known as a residency. After the national board certification is received, a state license is earned. Each foot has 26 bones and numerous tendons, ligaments, and muscles, and any one of these components can become injured due to an injury or a medical condition. Some of the foot ailments that take people to podiatrists include having tingling or numbing sensations in their feet or having a foot wound that does not heal. Anyone who shows interest in this type of profession is urged to contact a podiatrist who can discuss if a career in podiatry is the correct choice for them.

If you are dealing with pain in your feet and ankles, you may want to seek help from a podiatrist. Feel free to contact Steven Spivak, DPM from Mount Holly Family Footcare. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Causes of Numbness in the Feet

Sometimes when you sit for a while with legs crossed, a feeling of numbness and tingling in the feet sets in, but dissipates rapidly after standing up or changing positions. The term for this sensation is transient (temporary) paresthesia. Frequent or long term numbness, however, can indicate more serious problems and could be caused by an underlying medical condition, such as diabetes or peripheral artery disease. Other possible causes of numbness in the feet include an injury that puts pressure on the nerves, lower back problems, or sciatica (irritation of the sciatic nerve). Tarsal tunnel syndrome, when a nerve that runs from the back of leg to the ankle and foot is compressed or damaged, also can result in numbness. Tumors or growths that put pressure on the spinal cord, legs or feet may be another cause. Numbness is often joined by tingling, pain, and a burning or itching sensation. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms regularly, it is a good idea to consult a podiatrist who can determine the cause and suggest an appropriate treatment plan.

Everyday foot care is very important to prevent infection and other foot ailments. If you need your feet checked, contact Steven Spivak, DPM from Mount Holly Family Footcare. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Everyday Foot Care

Often, people take care of their bodies, face and hair more so than they do for their feet. But the feet are a very important aspect of our bodies, and one that we should pay more attention to. Without our feet, we would not be able to perform most daily tasks.

It is best to check your feet regularly to make sure there are no new bruises or cuts that you may not have noticed before. For dry feet, moisturizer can easily be a remedy and can be applied as often as necessary to the affected areas. Wearing shoes that fit well can also help you maintain good foot health, as well as making it easier to walk and do daily activities without the stress or pain of ill-fitting shoes, high heels, or even flip flops. Wearing clean socks with closed shoes is important to ensure that sweat and bacteria do not accumulate within the shoe. Clean socks help to prevent Athlete’s foot, fungi problems, bad odors, and can absorb sweat.

Various Types of Running Shoes

There are individual needs and wants for the majority of shoes, and running shoes are no exception. There are two general categories for these types of shoes, consisting of neutral or stable. Shoes that have limited structure are considered to be neutral, enabling the foot to flex and move freely. They can provide comfort, and the majority of runners prefer to wear these types of running shoes. People who have excessive pronation may choose a stability shoe, and this may provide a more controlled run. Patients who have flat feet may feel more comfortable when they purchase a shoe for stability. Research has shown that people who run long distances may desire shoes that have extra cushioning, providing additional comfort. There are numerous sub-categories for running shoes, and if you would like more information about how to choose the right running shoe, it is advised that you consult with a podiatrist.

If you are a runner, wearing the right running shoe is essential. For more information, contact Steven Spivak, DPM from Mount Holly Family Footcare. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Choosing the Right Running Shoe for Your Foot Type

To increase performance and avoid the risk of injury, it is important to choose the right running shoe based on your foot type. The general design of running shoes revolves around pronation, which is how the ankle rolls from outside to inside when the foot strikes the ground.

  • Neutral runners are able to choose from a wide variety of shoes, including minimalist shoes or even going barefoot.
  • Runners who overpronate, or experience an over-abundance of ankle rolling, should choose shoes that provide extra motion control and stability.
  • Runners who underpronate, or supinate, have feet that have high arches and lack flexibility, preventing shock absorption. They require shoes with more flexibility and cushion.

Causes of Nerve Pain in the Foot

Two of the most common causes of nerve-related foot pain are neuropathy resulting from diabetes and nerves that are compressed. Symptoms of nerve-related foot pain include a burning, aching, or tingling feeling. Sometimes it may feel as if you are receiving an electric shock. Other telltale signs are when the pain gets worse at night or while doing certain activities. Several conditions may cause nerve pain in the foot. Included is Baxter’s neuropathy, which is the entrapment of the inferior calcaneal nerve that runs beneath the base of the arch nearest the heel. Other causes are Morton’s neuroma, which is the compression of nerves between the toes, and peripheral neuropathy, which may be the result of any number of causes. Relief from nerve pain in the feet can be experienced through electrical stimulation, orthotics, certain anti-inflammatory medications, and cortico-steroid injections. To find out which treatment is best for you, it is suggested that you consult with a podiatrist for a full examination and diagnosis.
